The phrase “Born to Lose, Live to Win” is strongly associated with Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, but he didn’t exactly create it. 

“Born to Lose” goes way back — especially in the outlaw and rebel subcultures. It was famously tattooed on Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls and was already circulating in 1950s biker culture.

But Lemmy popularised and immortalised the full phrase.
He used Born to Lose, Live to Win as his personal motto and dropped it into Motörhead’s universe, giving it new life.

So while Lemmy didn’t invent it, he absolutely made it his own — embedding it permanently into the biker and rock world.
